The 2017 FlowRider® World Flowboarding Championships will take place at Aquaworld® in Cancún, Mexico, November 3-5th featuring the best flowboarders in the world!
Aquaworld and the surrounding all-inclusive resorts have a lot to offer but, remember, Mexico is FULL of awesome adventure beyond these spots!
Here are a few tips (Do’s & Don’ts) to make the most of the trip and help your travels flow more smoothly.
PREREGISTER FOR THE COMPETITION
Get your entries in ASAP. It’s so easy – sign up online, pay when you arrive! If you preregister before the end of week, you will save money, secure your slot and get a FREE event T-Shirt and welcome packet! Perks galore!
Late fees will apply after October 31st for all competitors.
Bonus: DO pre-order your official WFC event jersey from SuperDuper Surf or bring cash to the event to score one while supplies last!
USE CASH CURRENCIES
Word on the street is that it’s best to have cash when paying for things in Cancun. Don’t bring a suitcase full of money or carry big bills. If you rely on debit or credit cards, the ATM fees and foreign transaction fees can add up fast. The majority of places will take a credit card but it becomes a hassle with taxis, local markets and you will lose all bargaining leverage. US dollars are actually accepted and it’s always a good idea to keep a few pesos in your pocket.
100 pesos is like 5 bucks – Think of it like Craigslist, don’t settle for the initial listing price, and bargain a little bit. Ask “Cuanto cuesta?” for how much and go from there.
COME TO THE WELCOME PARTY ON FRIDAY
Aquaworld is offering multiple practice sessions and discounted activities all day on November 3rd for preregistered competitors. In addition, there will be food trucks onsite offering up delicious local food. To top it all off, there will be a LIVE DJ and extended practice times for preregistered competitors only from 7-9pm.
Let’s showcase the best riding the sport has to offer, be professionals and have fun!
BEAT THE HEAT
From the heat of the competition on wave to the scorching sun rays to the red hot chili peppers (even if you do fancy the hot sauce back home, take it in doses until you know you can handle the heat), don’t underestimate the heat south of the border. Preregistered competitors will get welcome packs with a long sleeve limited official event T-shirt and thanks to Banana Boat Sport sunscreen for additional coverage, along with Flow Water to keep you hydrated.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AQUAWORLD DISCOUNT PACKAGES
Cool off from the heat and experience Aquatastic fun! Aquaworld is known as the ‘Water Fun Experts’ and will have discounted family packages for preregistered competitors. Aquaworld is the largest marina/dive shop in Latin America; it is exactly what it sounds like and more, AQUA-WORLD (Also seems, very fitting for the WORLD Flowboarding Championships!) The venue features the FlowRider® Double, snorkeling, boat tours, dolphins and much, much more! SEE SPECIAL OFFERS IN THE SLIDE SHOW GALLERY ABOVE
ATTEND THE AWARDS CEREMONY & AFTER PARTY AT HARD ROCK CAFÉ
Hard Rock Cafe Cancun is excited to host and welcome flowboarders & there immediate travel partners to the Aquaworld Cancun DEPARTURE PARTY on Sunday, November 5th following the World Flowboarding Championships competition. Preregistered competitors will get a FREE DEPARTURE DINNER & DRINK during the Awards Banquet and After Party. In addition, there will be a 10% discount, including bar beverages!
Cancun is a super awesome place, but it’s only a slice of what Mexico has to offer. From history to local food and night life, be sure to explore the local culture and tastes because the surrounding areas in Mexico have a lot to offer.
Culture, Local Foods, Cenotes, Mayan Ruins, 5th street are just a few recommendations to consider.
DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT OR YOUR BOARDS
Make sure you pack your passport. Don’t forget it, don’t lose it. And of course, don’t forget to bring your boards. If you need to gear up before the competition before sure to check out @FlowRiderShop and e-mail Adam@FlowRider.com for special competitor pricing.
DON’T LOSE YOUR IMMIGRATION CARD
You get this when you fly in and you fill it out for Immigrations (bonus: don’t forget to bring your own pen on the plane). Customs will clear you, stamp it, tear the bottom and give it back to you. While you won’t need to show this during you trip, you will want to save it because you will need it upon departure and could be subject to a replacement fee if you need a new one.
DON’T BE PRESSURED UPON ARRIVAL, GO WITH GUSTAVO!
When you arrive, try not to be overwhelmed when you are swarmed with greetings and promotions for taxi services, tours, time shares and more! Remember to be polite and just say, “No Gracias.”

DON’T DRINK TAP WATER – GO WITH THE FLOW
Unless you are staying an All-Inclusive Resort or popular hotel chain, it is not recommend to drink the local tap water in Mexico. Highly recommended to drink and brush your teeth with bottled water. Thanks to FLOW Water, competitors, judges and spectators will stay cool and hydrated with the official water of the World Flowboarding Championships.
DON’T FORGET TO TIP AND BE RESPECTFUL TO LOCALS
Keep in mind, these people live where we vacation and this is a Spanish-speaking country. While Cancun will be a more touristy area, overall the culture is known to operate a little slower, so don’t expect speedy service or everyone to speak English.
Don’t forget to brush up on your basic Spanish, remember to tip, be respectful and communicate in the native language when possible. Say, “Por Favor”, “Gracias” and maybe have a little vocab list to impress and connect with the local people, it will go a long way.
