Just a few days before kicking off the US FlowRider® FLOW Tour Championship Week in Utah, the FlowRider FLOW Tour stopped in Snohomish. Every year this event gets bigger and helps keep Snohomish County on the flow grid.
“It was a great opportunity for competitors to stay warm for the upcoming events in Utah,” mentions Adam Muller, FLOW Tour Coordinator.
A handful of riders who made the trip took advantage of the free camping opportunity onsite, courtesy of the Snohomish Aquatic Center. Flowboarders from California, Canada, Idaho and various surrounding states traveled to take on some of Snohomish’s finest.
FLOW Tour members accumulate points throughout the season to see who will earn the title as the Nation’s best in their respective divisions.
The competition always encourages novice riders to enter the competition. There is a division for all ages and skill levels and special for Snohomish Aquatic Center this year, a Staff Division!
“It’s important for locals to get involved, sometimes they feel intimidated, but the squad in Snohomish was fearless; that’s what we like to see,” Muller elaborated. “We had a handful of locals competing for their first time ever,” Muller adds. The locals showed home-wave pride and really showed up ready to defend their home wave in Washington!
Participants battled it out on the wave for prizes contributed by generous local sponsors and Official FLOW Tour sponsors like Xterra Surf, SuperDuper Surf & DIFF Eyewear. Those that ended up atop the podium, took home some bling bling – hefty Gold, Silver and/or Bronze FlowRider FLOW Tour medals.
“The FLOW Tour has been amazing for us – our amateurs, kids who started with us who couldn’t do more than bodyboarding, are now standing up and walking away with a medal,” Chris Benson, Snohomish Aquatic Center Supervisor, told a local HeraldNet newspaper recently (Read full article here).
The FlowRider in general increases excitement in the community, but when the real-deal FLOW Tour comes to town, it give kids (and entire families!) a chance to strive towards something and a chance to come together for a fun, healthy activity.
Evan Campbell (1st Place) and John McVickas (4th Place), Snohomish’s very own employees, battled through the semi-final rounds and secured spots in the Men’s Flowboard Division. Evan was also the winner of the Snohomish Aquatic Center Staff Division, John was right behind him as the runner-up.
Local Flow Pro and event favorite, Scott Callens, claimed victory and held it down the Pro Flowboard Division. If you missed the action on the @flowboarders social media account, you can watch the un edited raw final on YouTube.
“It’s awesome having everyone gathered around our home wave,” states Callens. “The vibes are chill and the times are good,” he adds.
The Canadian duo, Jonathan Hintz and Isaac Webster, two of the top riders on the Canadian FLOW Tour, made the trek down from Kelowna and took the top 2 spots in the Junior Flowboard Division. Local riders, Cole Watts (3rd Place) and Zack Shuster (4th Place) rounded out the final in a competitive field of riders.
Jonathan Hintz, Junior Flowboard winner and Pro Bodyboard runner up, was quick to update his social media status to read “Snohomish Aquatics Center was so kind to us.”
Jonathan and other top Pro Division finalist were stoked to take home their cash prize and have some extra spending money in their pocket for the trip to Utah. “It was a blast” added Hintz.
This is the first year that Snohomish Aquatics Center raised their game by offering these cash prizes. The goal was to attract more Pro Riders to the competition. The plan worked – the pros definitely showed up!
Scott Callens (FLOW Tour Veteran/Local Pro), Daniel Tarapchak (Former World Champion) and Jonathan Hintz (Canadian Champion) to name a few were in the house a put on a beautiful display of riding.
“We are seeing the progress from our local participants and the strong community it’s creating,” admits Rob Serviss, Snohomish Aquatics Manager. “We will certainly continue the tradition and look forward to expanding our offerings related to the FlowRider attraction.”
The FlowRider FLOW Tour keeps things flowing as yet another successful competition is in the books and riders are already packed and geared up for a trio of events this week.
See ya on the wave!
