Surf’s Up Snohomish

Surfing in Snohomish? Not quite, but it is as close as you are going to get. The FlowRider FLOW Tour made its way to Washington this past weekend and it was surf’s up at Snohomish Aquatic Center’s inaugural FlowRider FLOW Tour competition.

Snohomish Aquatic Center, a 25 million dollar facility, features a FlowRider Single, lap pools, stadium seating, top-of-the-line aquatic amenities and a great environment for the entire family. It is definitely the go-to place in Snohomish rain or shine, weekend or weekday.

Snohomish managers, Robert and Nathan, were spectators at this year’s FLOW Tour Prime Stop at Planet Hollywood FlowRider. After they witnessed such an exciting, spectator-filled weekend, they knew they had to get their venue involved with the FlowRider FLOW Tour.

“We love it!” says Robert Serviss, Aquatic Operations Manager. “It’s great having these riders showcase and enjoy this fun attraction,” he adds.

The Aquatic Center partnered with Flowboarding League of the World (FLOW) to put on a FlowRider Pro/Am competition for the local rider base as well as other flowboarding activities on and off the wave.

“Helping to grow a rider base and giving these local riders a jump start introduction to the sport is so exciting,” explains Adam Muller, FLOW Events and Sport Marketing Coordinator for FlowRider Inc.

Per usual, the word spread through the flowboarding community about the contest and drew in competitors from Idaho, California and the surround areas. These flowboarders’ eagerness to showcase their skills on the wave really showed and made for an awesome contest!

“We did a refresher training with the staff, had a competitors meeting to break down the event’s format and judging criteria, plus we offered “Flow with a Pro” sessions to enhance rider skillsets,” mentions Muller. Nick Nguyen and Muller were onsite all weekend offering training techniques, board demos and trick tips; all riders were welcome and encouraged to join.

The weekend also featured a kickoff party with complimentary ride time, food and beverages, wave shows from Pro Flowboarder and 5x World Bodyboarding Champion, Nick Nguyen and local pro, Scott Callens. Nguyen and Callens doubled as guest judges for the competition.

“It’s fun to meet new flowboarders and I like to promote the sport and the attraction itself anytime I can,” mentions Nick Nguyen. “Plus, it’s a really cool venue and the vibes are good!” Nguyen adds.

Scott Callens, who recently moved from Texas to the state of Washington, secured a job at the Aquatic Center working on the FlowRider and is obviously a great addition to their team. Scott is a seasoned veteran on the FLOW Tour and was anxious for the opportunity to defend his new home wave.

“I’m excited to build a community of Flowboarders at the Aquatic Center and am looking forward to bringing the FLOW Tour back here in 2017,” explains local pro Flowboarder and Aquatic Center Employee, Scott Callens.

“We are all around happy with the way the event went and we are already planning for next year,” says Nathan Daly, Business Services Manager at Snohomish Aquatic Center.

A huge thank you to all the FLOW Tour sponsors – FlowRider Shop, SuperDuper Surf, 13roz International and Boarders Magazine – for stuffing the prize packs. Additionally, a shout out is owed to the local supporting sponsors who helped make this event happen – Alfy’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, Bickford Ford, Century 21 Real Estate, Outback Steak House.
