US National Championships (FlowBarrel)

All weekend long the sun was shining, drinks were flowing and it was standing room only at Wave House San Diego at Belmont Park. The lively crowd and competitors took Sunday Funday to the next level.

The weekend kicked off with Night Flight wave shows, Flow with a Pro training sessions, ride/venue discounts and the annual AM Champs competition. The AM Champs contest invites all experience levels to ride the wave.  It is open to local riders as well as riders from all over the U.S. that are interested in battling out for cool sponsor prize packs and one of the final spots in the US National Championships.

Amateur competitors rushed the 10 foot surf simulator for their chance to compete against the best riders in the National Championships and then potentially a chance to represent Team USA at the 2016 World Flowboarding Championships in October.

The main event highlighted WaveHouse’s very own team riders, alongside Team USA in an epic throw down on the wave as flowboarders aimed to impressed judges and spectators. They all served up their most radical maneuvers, flip tricks and stylish turns in hopes of earning their way to the top of the podium and paid airfare to compete at the World Championships.

The vibes were good and the crowd was jamming with RedBull’s DJ Slip Matt in the house. Spectators deserted their beach towels in the sand, created traffic jams on the boardwalk and even climbed over walls the get a good view of the high flying action. Needless to say, the venue’s energy level was turned up; all eyes on the wave.

WaveHouse’s very own riders Brandon Stevens and Team Captain, Marcus Richerson, took the air and were event standouts as they put pressure on some of the top-seeded riders, including the defending Champion, Eric Silverman.

“So stoked to win Nationals back to back at Wave House and represent Team USA with my best friends,” explains Silverman.  In the end, Silverman came out on top and was victorious in both the strapless and strapped flowboard divisions, reclaiming his Overall National title and securing his spot on Team USA. “Thanks to my family, friends and sponsors for the continuous support. Singapore here we come!” Silverman added.

At the World Championships in Singapore, Eric will be have 3 other Team USA members by his side flying our stars and stripes high – Sean Silveira, Amy Stevens and Nick Nguyen.

“I am stoked to be on Team USA for the FlowBarrel. Two years in a row is a huge accomplishment,” explains Silveira. “I am pumped for Singapore!” Sean Silveira finished second overall and was runner up in both strapless and strapped categories by showcasing stylish, innovative and stylish riding.

Women’s Champion, Amy Stevens, who defended her title on Sunday, is hopeful to reclaim her World title at WaveHouse Sentosa. Stevens is a multi-time National Champion and former World Champion who happily just gave birth to her second child.

“Being 2 months postpartum, nursing between heats, minimal training made this a difficult win… but I pulled it off!” she explains. “Singapore here I come!!!!”  Amy also went on to give a shout out to the other female finalist, Crystal Paslawsky and Jessica Nichols who attacked the wave and continue to raise the bar for female riders everywhere.

In the bodyboard discipline, flowboarding legend Nick Nguyen topped the top of the field, edging out veteran competitors Tyler Danek (Texas) who finished second overall and young up and coming shredder, Daniel Tarapchak (California) finishing third overall.

As the sun set over the ocean and we closed the books on another exciting flowboarding competition, the party continued at Wave House San Diego, thanks to all of our supporting sponsors – Red Bull, Sun Bum, Espolon Tequila, Corona Extra, Captain Morgan, Hyatt Regency, Quicksilver, Kreed & Crush Eyewear, FlowRiderShop.com and Flowboarding League Of the World.
